Marine Park Alliance is spearheading a movement to elevate Brooklyn’s largest city property as a flagship park. Since 2014, this grassroots organization has envisioned making Marine Park’s unique combination of landscapes a desirable destination for New Yorkers to experience. We coalesce people passionate about upgrading the social and ecological services of the park to serve both local and regional communities in three important ways: parks equity & public health, advocacy with a collective voice, and land conservation & stewardship.
The Alliance creates educational and cultural programming for the benefit of the diverse range of people seeking recreation and relaxation in the greenspace. We celebrate the park as a place for social bridging and bonding across ethnicities and generations, and work to undo past barriers to enjoying the park, providing all programming free of cost.
True to its name, the Alliance collaborates with partner organizations to advocate and care for Marine Park’s Forever Wild Preserve. Together we raise awareness of the park’s unique charms as well as its needs, aiming to develop the next generation of conservationists and urban park stewards. We champion the value of the park to the public and elected officials, and work with volunteers extensively to care for the natural areas of the park by weeding out invasive species, planting in native species, erecting protective fencing, clearing dump sites, and more. Our ongoing project to build up pollinators’ gardens along the oval path and a pollinators’ meadow near the salt marsh along Avenue U is key to improving the area for both human and animal visitors alike. The project is just one of several planned or underway to improve Marine Park for its users.
Public support is critical to the organization, and we subsist on financial contributions and other support that allows us to continue reaching our important goals.
